Joseph R. Welch has been practicing law for 25 years, the last 18 of which have been in Central Kentucky. He obtained his undergraduate degree (B.S,) in Business from the University of Kentucky, where he also earned a varsity letter as a catcher on the baseball team, and was named Academic All-SEC Conference in his senior year. He attended Seattle University Law School, and has been admitted to practice law in both Kentucky and Washington state.
Mr. Welch has practiced in several different areas of law over the course of his career, and has a vast general knowledge of the law. In the last several years, however, the focus of his practice has been mainly in the areas of Family Law, Criminal Defense, and Personal Injury, although he has also handled matters involving business contracts, wills, and trust and estate cases as well.
Mr. Welch has argued cases in almost every county in Central and Eastern Kentucky over the course of his career, and has additionally practiced before the Kentucky Court of Appeals, the Kentucky Supreme Court and the U.S. Federal District Court (Eastern Division).
He spent his formative years in the Great Pacific Northwest, where he attended Cascade High School in Everett, Washington, but he previously lived in several other states before then. In short, he has seen most of this great country of ours, having traveled to 40 states, to date. He has lived in Lexington for the last 20 years. His hobbies include golfing, water skiing, coaching youth baseball, following University of Kentucky sports, world travel, and raising and training Siberian Huskies.

He has a sister who practices employment law in Colorado, and his brother-in-law is a District Court judge in Denver. His father is a retired plastic surgeon who resides in a small town, outside of Seattle. His mother was a former marine biologist at the Seattle Aquarium. His uncle is employed by UK, where he has served as an Assistant Athletic Director since the late 1970’s, and his aunt is employed as a registered nurse at UK.
